Previously known as the Northern Province, Limpopo is an area of vast diversity and is bordered by Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana.
The word-famous Kruger National Park borders the northern Limpopo Province and offers a Safari experience that ranks with the best Africa, and the world, has to offer you. If you want to experience the untamed, natural beauty and diversity of South Africa, then look no further than the Limpopo Province.
This area includes the Waterberg, Capricorn, Zoutpansberg and the Valley of Olifants. Limpopo province offers stunning scenery, game viewing, culture and history.
This area is less than three hours from Johannesburg and due to the large quantities of water available offers prolific game viewing, including some magnificent bird life viewing. Centred around Polokwane, formerly Pietersburg, this area is sometimes perhaps unkindly thought of as the area between Johannesburg and the Kruger National Park. It has four of the major entry points into the park and on its very eastern edge some exceptional private game reserves. However there is much more, and in particular some of the oldest tribal remains in South Africa, including some magnificent San paintings and fossilised dinosaur footprints. There are some picturesque towns sprinkled on the blue slopes of the Zoutpansberg Mountain, which make it one of the most beautiful regions in the whole country.
Things not to miss in the area:
1. The Madjadji Cycad Reserve – this protects an impressive number of giant palm trees which were once abundant, now endangered.
2. Mapungubwe National Park – a World Heritage Site which, a thousand years ago, was the centre of the largest kingdom in the sub continent and there is evidence of training in gold and ivory with China, India and Egypt.
3. Duiwelskloof – home to the Modjadji tribe, a matriarchal society that has produced five Rain Queens in a 200 year old dynasty.
4. Numerous sites with San cave paintings, some of which are the very best in South Africa.
